On my 6th birthday I was presented with a gigantic cake – imagine my surprise when a fat Chinese man popped out of the top and launched into an off-key rendition of Neil Young’s After The Goldrush to the tune of Knees Up Mother Brown. Then imagine my further surprise when a sad, drunk clown popped out of the Chinese guy’s head, mid-verse, and proceeded to regurgitate pig innards all over the dining room table, ruining the carefully laid out paper plates of cheese-on-sticks and hula hoops, permanently staining my sister’s dress and making me cry like a pathetic little baby. My mother was furious with the bakery, because she’d simply ordered a victoria sponge with a couple of little plastic trains stuck on top and my name written in blue icing.
